Unknown Miracles

On a cloudless, breezeless, sunny day in Denver a woman and her young daughter leave a card shop and head for the street. In her right hand the mother protectively grasps the hand of her child while the left hand clutches a greeting card that has captured her undivided attention. In fact, she is so engrossed in the card that she doesn't notice the shuttle bus bearing down on them. A couple dining in a nearby outdoor restaurant see it and in horror begin to yell in the hope of catching the mother's attention and averting a disaster. Before a word can be said, however, a breeze blows the card out of her hand and over her shoulder. Instinctively she spins around to grab the airborne card, nearly knocking her daughter off her feet in the process. By the time she catches the card and the two recover to face the street, the shuttle has sped by. They are oblivious to the tragedy that almost befell them.
A miracle has just occurred. Without the breeze out of nowhere on a windless day to snatch the card from the mother's hand, the unsuspecting pair may well have walked right into the path of serious injury or death. When we or a loved one faces a serious threat like the loss of livelihood, health or life itself, we realize we are not the author of our destiny. We therefore pray for God's help and cling to the hope of a miracle. It's one thing to recognize and be grateful for the miraculous. But the story of the mother and her young daughter is a reminder that miracles take place all the time saving us from unknown suffering and hardship.
If heaven is anything like Mitch Albom invisions it for Eddie "Maintenance" then one day we will be made aware of life's unknown miracles. In the meantime when happenstance inconveniences us, we might do well to consider the possibility that it is not by bad luck or misfortune we've been visited, but by an unknown miracle.
Have you ever witnessed another person's unknown miracle?
